Cat Battles How to Lift: Shift Key, Range and Effect
Lift in Cat Battles is on Shift, per the official game description. Learn what the close-range lift does, its one condition, and how it differs from Grab.
Lift in Cat Battles is the Shift action. Get next to an opponent and press Shift, and your cat lifts them — a close-range control move that sets up a positional advantage. There is one condition: the opponent must be within usable range when you press. No combo, release button, or guaranteed throw is part of the documented move.
The Lift input: Shift
The game's official HOW TO PLAY description lists the four basic inputs in one line: Punch on Click, Grab on Right Click, Kick on F, and Lift on Shift, with abilities on Q. That same listing is repeated across stat mirrors, controls tables, and the beginner practice drills, and no source assigns Lift to any other key — Shift is the developer-listed binding.
Two boundaries worth knowing: every documented input is PC mouse-and-keyboard (the description covers no controller bindings), and nothing documents remapping Shift in settings, so treat it as fixed rather than configurable. If a control update lands, the in-game HOW TO PLAY panel is the authoritative list to recheck. For every other key in one place, see the Cat Battles controls guide.
What Lift does, and its one requirement
The official description names the action but not its effect; the guide tables that break down each input agree on what it does: Lift controls an opponent at close range to set up a positional advantage. The same tables name the move's common mistake — holding the input without checking whether the opponent is within usable range. In practice: walk up to your target first, then press Shift, instead of mashing it from a distance and hoping.
You'll know a lift connected by the result. Official preview stills from the developer show the lifted state clearly — an orange cat holding an opponent at the ring edge during a sudden-death bout, and several cats lifting one opponent together in the elevator arena. When your Shift press works, you'll see your cat holding an opponent like that.
No Grab first, no release button
Nothing in the game's description documents a Grab prerequisite, a combo sequence, a release input, or a guaranteed throw after Lift. The controls guide makes the same point directly when it tells players to try Right Click (Grab) and Shift (Lift) as separate actions, noting that no required sequence or guaranteed throw is documented. So the whole documented move is:
- Close the distance until the opponent is in range.
- Press Shift.
- Expect the lifted state described above — that's the complete action, with nothing to wait for afterward.
How long the opponent stays lifted, whether you can move while holding them, the exact range, any cooldown, and whether a throw follow-up exists are simply not documented yet. That's a gap in current documentation, not proof the mechanics don't exist — so don't build your plan around an unconfirmed combo. A clean way to learn the move yourself is the beginner loop: pick one input, use it in a live bout, note exactly what you saw, then repeat from a similar position.
Lift vs Grab
Lift and Grab are both close-range actions, but they do different jobs:
| Action | Input | Documented use | Common mistake |
|---|---|---|---|
| Grab | Right Click | Secure a target at close range and open follow-up actions | Grabbing from too far away |
| Lift | Shift | Control an opponent at close range and set up positional advantage | Holding the input with the opponent out of range |
Grab locks a target to create openings; Lift controls an opponent to gain position. The second-bout drill in the beginner guide has you press Right Click and Shift separately until you can tell which action you triggered — treat them as two tools, not one combo. For Grab's own handling in detail, see how to grab in Cat Battles.
